Thomas Megill Obituary

Thomas L Megill 85, of Treasure Island, Florida, and Lexington, Kentucky was born the proud son of Willie and Myrtle Megill on March 8, 1932 in Remo Virginia. He passed away February 10 in St. Petersburg, Florida and will be buried at Smithland Baptist Church in Heathsville, Virginia on February 24 at 1 PM. Tom was a true southern gentleman who loved his God, his family, his country, his president, rook, pinochle, bridge and the Tampa Bay Rays. He is predeceased by his first wife Beth and 2 sons, Thomas and Jeffrey, grandson Ryan, nephew Eric Silver (Betsy) and his sisters Virginia, Frances, and Mary Page. He is survived by his wife Janice, his sisters-in-law Betty Taylor (Jim), Jeanne Rebele (David), and Barbara Bittner, brothers-in-law Bob Hall (Connie), Jim Hall (Carma), daughter Laura Megill, son Clarke Megill (Judy), daughter Deb Demine, stepdaughters Dussy Hall, Burnetta Hall (Tom), Madonna Hall (Jeff), stepson Dan Hall and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.  A natural athlete Tom learned to swim at an early age with his dog Jumbo on The Great Wicomico River. In 1940 his family moved to Washington DC where he excelled in baseball and basketball at McKinley Tech H.S. and earned "All City" honors as the starting center on the "Fab Five" basketball team. Upon graduation, Tom joined the Navy and traveled the world. While stationed at Subic Bay in the Philippines Tom played on the Navy baseball team. He still holds the record for hitting a home run farther than Babe Ruth did when the "Babe" toured with a group of all stars in the early 1930s. Tom remained in the Navy for 20 years while studying at the University of Maryland. To quote his grandson Laine," a huge light has gone out of our lives". He was loved by all. He will be missed.
