Mary Smith Vanderpool, 95, died peacefully March 20, 2021 at Highlands
ARH in Prestonsburg, Kentucky with family by her side.
She was born January 31, 1926, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, the
daughter of the late Ashford Smith and Ilant Bailey Smith.
As a teen, Mary moved to Michigan where she worked in a greenhouse
with her sister Luna. The young sisters worked to send money home to
Kentucky where they helped clear their father's debt.
She met and married the love of her life, Monroe Vanderpool in Lancer,
Kentucky, on February 21, 1946. Mary and Monroe lived in Hippo,
Kentucky for 44 blessed years until Monroe passed away in 1990. She
always said that what first attracted her to him was his pretty brown eyes,
and I would imagine he was equally drawn to her beautiful blue eyes.
They built a wonderful life together and a home where family was always
welcome and no matter the circumstances, always felt safe, accepted and
supported, and knew without a shadow of a doubt that they were loved.
Monroe and Mary were both shining examples of goodness, integrity and
class.
Mary was an avid quilter, gardener, canner and-enjoyed lovingly cooking
for her family and friends. She was known by many for her spotless home
and delicious homemade apple pies. Her greatest passion was the love of
her family.
She belonged to the Philadelphia Old Regular Baptist Church in Hippo,
Kentucky, until her death. She loved listening to Bluegrass gospel music
and had the distinct pleasure of meeting Ralph Stanley later in her life.
She is survived by her loving family;
