Mary Allen Obituary

Mary June Allen, 89, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2021 with her family by her side at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Prestonsburg, Kentucky.  She was born June 6, 1932 in Martin, Kentucky to Ethel and Thaoe Frazier.  Mary June grew up in Martin, Kentucky with her beloved brother, Don Frazier.  Mary June graduated from Martin High School in 1950.  She was Martin High School’s first “Miss Purpleflash.”

Mary June married Randall Allen of Allen, Kentucky on August 31, 1950 in Martin.  They were married for 24 years before Randall suddenly passed away in 1974.  Mary June and Randall raised four children together, while running the Mountain Printing Company in Allen.  She later worked at Haworth-Meyer-Boleyn Professional Engineers during the construction of Kentucky 80 and owned and ran a shoe store in Allen.  She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members, including her daughter, Libby, after she was tragically paralyzed and her mother until she passed away.

Never one to sit down or let the grass grow beneath her feet, Mary June was a poet, wonderful cook, talented crocheter and dressmaker, gardener, avid reader and pianist.  She followed the Kentucky Wildcats and national and state politics fervently.  As her family grew, Mary June wrote poems for her children and grandchildren and created many treasured crocheted heirlooms.

Mary June was a member of the Church of Christ in Martin, singing in the choir and running a “Kiddie College” kindergarten for the community’s youngest children.

Mary June is preceded in death by her husband, Randall Allen; daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Slone; and her granddaughter, McKinley Chase Allen.

Mary June is survived by her brother, Dr. Don Frazier (Peggi) of Lexington, Kentucky;  daughter, Kathy Fitzpatrick (Frank) of Prestonsburg, Kentucky; son Tim Allen (Janie) of Martin, Kentucky;  son Stephen Allen (Kelli) of Senoia, Georgia;  five grandchildren: Leslie Pennington, Bryan Fitzpatrick, Olivia Schneeweiss, Taber Allen and Kison Allen; and three great grandchildren: Miles Pennington, Seth Pennington and Virginia Schneeweiss.
