Irene Watkins, 84, of Mousie, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on May 1st, 2026 at Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard, Kentucky. She was born on November 22, 1941, in Rock Fork, Kentucky.
Irene was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was defined by her deep love for her family and her unwavering faith. She devoted many years of her professional life to serving others, working as a shipping clerk for National Mines for over 25 years, later as an office manager for RM Johnson Engineering, and ending her career as a bookkeeper at May Valley Elementary.
A lifetime member of the Eastern Star, Irene formed cherished friendships through the organization that she held close to her heart. She was also a devoted member of Garrett First Baptist Church, where her relationship with God remained one of the most important aspects of her life.
Irene was full of life, known for her contagious laugh that could be recognized from another room. She loved fiercely, spoke her mind with confidence, and grew even more bold and spirited with age. Her generosity knew no bounds, and she found her greatest joy in her family—especially her grandchildren and great-grandchild, whom she loved more than life itself. In her final days, she was especially excited to welcome her great-grandchild, a moment that brought her immense happiness.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Cecil Watkins; her children, Cecil R. (Denise) Watkins and Lisa (Paul) Thornsberry; her grandchildren, Ashlee (Tyler) O’Brien, Tanner Thornsberry, and Hayden Watkins; her great-grandchild, Carson O’Brien; and her special nephew, Paul (Diane) Mosley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Viola Boleyn Wicker; her sister, Rhoda Mosley; and her brothers, Mart Wicker and Delbert Wicker.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 4, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, with Randy Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in the G.W. Bowling Cemetery, Garrett, Kentucky. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with an Eastern Star service Sunday evening. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Kentucky.
Irene’s legacy is one of love, strength, faith, and unforgettable spirit. There will never be another one like her.
