Homer Draughn 94 of Lexington KY passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at the Thompson Hood Veterans Center, Wilmore, KY. Homer was born in Leburn KY in Knott County. Homer was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Bessie Conley Draughn and his parents Leslie and Ruie Maggard Draughn, Brothers, Shelby and Delmar, Sisters, Clara Evelyn Draughn, Gertrude Horne, and Irene who died at 8-months-old. Homer is survived by his Son, Willis Conley Draughn (Shirley), and Granddaughter, Amanda N Draughn, Sisters, Norma Sloan and Jean Smith(Fred),
Homer graduated from Hindman High School in 1947 and earned an associate degree from Caney Junior College in 1949, which is now called Alice Lloyd College. Homer enrolled at the University of Kentucky, but his studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served as a Corporal in Austria during the Korean war for two years. Upon his return home, Homer briefly taught school in Floyd County. He enrolled once again at the University of Kentucky where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration.
Homer joined the Commonwealth Life Insurance Company in 1953 as an agent. He had originally intended to take it as a summer job to supplement his teaching income, but he liked it so much that he stayed on an additional 46 years. He was known to most of Floyd County as the “Insurance Man” or just “Hey Insurance”. He was promoted to sales manager in Pikeville and Prestonsburg, and then served as Agency Manager in Ashland KY. Homer also held positions of president of the Big Sandy and the Ashland Life Underwriters Association. During his career with Commonwealth Life Insurance, he earned numerous awards and recognitions. In 1983, Homer moved to Lexington Ky where he served as Agency manager before accepting a position as General Agent and establishing the Draughn Insurance Agency. Homer officially retired from Commonwealth Life insurance Company in 1989 but continued to work for an additional 10 years.
Homer’s deep commitment to others was evidenced through his involvement with numerous civic organizations including the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge 869, Red Cross, Garrett Fire Department, and the American Legion. He also served as president of the Methodist Men’s programs in both Prestonsburg and Pikeville, and Vice President of the Alice Lloyd College Lexington Alumni organization. He was recognized as the Alice Lloyd College Alumnus of the year in 2008.
Funeral Services will be held. Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel with visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024. Burial will follow at the Mima Conley Cemetery in Hueysville, Ky. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Hollie Conley Scholarship Fund at Alice Lloyd College. A celebration of life will be held at St. Luke Church in Lexington KY,
