Delphia Jean Hackworth Hicks, 92, of Prestonsburg, widow of Donald J. Hicks, passed away Wednesday, September 4 at her home in Floyd County.
Delphia was born in Floyd County, August 31, 1932, to Harry Hackworth and Alice Helton Hackworth. Although she enjoyed travel, Delphia lived most of her life in the same area of Middlecreek. She graduated Pikeville College and had advanced degrees from Eastern Kentucky University. She was a lifelong teacher in the community and was a passionate teacher who loved families and children. She was a loving family and community member who was always available to counsel and assist in any way she could. She started teaching on her 18th birthday and taught in several one room schools in the area before finishing her career at Clark Elementary. In 1953, she was sent to the Open Fork community to teach and met her beloved husband, Donald, with whom she shared a 60 year marriage.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Prestonsburg, Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, KEA, past board member of Mountain Mental Health and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She was past State President of Delta Kappa Gamma and served on many of their committees. After her retirement, she served as Board Secretary for the Floyd County Farm Bureau for more than 20 years. She was also active with the Floyd County Homemakers and other Extension Services such as 4-H.
Mrs. Hicks is survived by her son Donald Derek (Debbie) Hicks of Middlecreek, her daughter Lynn (John) Fogle of Lexington, her granddaughter Greta (Ryan) Gilbert of Prestonsburg, her granddaughter Jessica (Amy Thomas) Hicks of Cincinnati, her grandson Jack Fogle of Lexington, her grandson Harry (Sara) Fogle of Marietta, GA and her beloved great grandchildren Amelia and Elijah Gilbert of Prestonsburg. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her parents, her brother Rebel Hackworth of Prestonsburg, brother Col. Robie Hackworth of Madison, Ala., brother Harry Hackworth of Holyoke, MA, brother Lloyd Hackworth of Granby, MA, brother Charles Hackworth of Prestonsburg and sister Dorothy Sue Hackworth Elrod of Winona Lake, IN.
Visitation is at Hall Funeral Home Saturday, September 7 from 6-9 pm and Celebration of Life at Hall Funeral Home Sunday 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests persons who are so moved to consider making a memorial gift to the First United Methodist Church of Prestonsburg or the Middlecreek Community Development & Food Pantry.
