Buford Layne

Buford Layne, age 87, passed away Friday, December 13th at his residence in Moorefield, KY.  Buford was a 1956 Graduate of Wayland High School and immediately after graduating he moved to Willard, Ohio to look for work.  Soon after Buford returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Anna Lee (Gibson) Layne and in August of 2024 they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

Buford lived with his family and worked for various companies in both Ohio and Michigan before finally returning to his home state of Kentucky in the mid-1960s.  Buford eventually moved his young family of five to Dema where he subsequently purchased Beaver Creek Restaurant and worked in the mining industry until his retirement in the early 1980s.

After retirement, Buford and Ann left Beaver Creek with their camper and proceeded to travel much of the country.  They eventually settled down in Moorefield, KY where Buford enjoyed gardening, cutting his grass, and working on his 1947 Jeep.  He was also actively involved in his local Masonic Lodge where he served as a Past Master and most recently was installed as an officer just the night before his passing.  In 2008, Buford received Jesus as his Lord and Savior and became a member of the Locust Grove Baptist Church in Carlisle, KY.

Buford was preceded in death by his parents, Delmer and Elsie (Little) Layne formerly of Steel’s Creek in Wayland, KY; a sister, Geraldine Allen of Allen, KY; a brother, Nathaniel “Buck” Layne of Prestonsburg, KY; and 4 great grandchildren.

Buford is survived by his wife, Anna Lee (Gibson) Layne, two sons, Timothy (Tammy) Layne of Carlisle, KY and Ricky (Cathy) Layne of Prestonsburg, KY; and one daughter Pamela (James) Bradley of Union, KY.  In addition, Buford is survived by his sister, Lena (Layne) Adkins of Huntington, WV; 7 grandchildren: Timothy Darrell Layne, Robin Coco, and Benjamin Layne all of Carlisle, KY; Andrea Conlon of Independence, KY; Bridgett Smith of Union, KY; Zachary Layne of Drift, KY and Jenna Layne of Arlington, VA.; 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Please join the family in celebrating his life at Hall Funeral Home in Martin, KY this Thursday and Friday. Visitation will begin at 5 pm on Thursday, December 19th with a Masonic Service at 7 pm. A Funeral Service is scheduled for Friday, December 20th at 1 pm with Ronnie Robinson officiating.  Burial will follow at the Turner Cemetery in Dema, KY.
