Barbara (Reed) Burke

February 28, 1937 ~ January 31, 2020 (age 82)

Barbara Reed Burke, beloved wife of Harry R. Burke and devoted mother to Jennifer Burke Elliott, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2020, at home with her loving family surrounding her. She was the daughter of the late Mark K. Sr. and Nelle B. Reed. Barbara and Harry shared 63 years of marriage and attribute that longevity to love and respect for one another. She was the matriarch of the family and loved being with her family and dear friends. She was a gracious hostess who enjoyed preparing delicious meals and entertaining family and friends with delightful and humorous stories. She was well known for her laugh that would fill the room.

An avid and talented bridge player, Barbara was a founding member of the Prestonsburg Bridge Club. She and her bridge partners shared years of comradery and joy. Trips with her dear girlfriends were filled with cards, laughter, delicious food and the occasional cocktail. Barbara had a smile and sense of humor that would light up the room. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Prestonsburg.

Barbara was always wearing a smile and was blessed with many good friends. She became a second mother to most of her daughter’s friends. She dished up food, advice and laughter as easily as she put on her lipstick.

Family was always important to Barbara. She was recently blessed with two new great granddaughters, Langston Katherine Garner (Burke Garner) and Anna Elizabeth Garner (Alexander Garner). These two toddlers brought more joy and love to her than she could ever imagine. She treasured them. The toddlers joined her family which already included two great grandchildren Cameron Baylee Kinsey and Audrey Brooke Elliott (Phillip W. Elliott) whom she cherished.

In addition to her husband and daughter, Barbara is survived by her son-in-law, Phillip David Elliott of Prestonsburg, Ky. She is also survived by her two grandsons Burke Franklin Garner and Alexander Reed (Alley) Garner of Prestonsburg, Ky., and one grandson whom she inherited when her beloved son-in-law joined the family, Phillip William Elliott (Brandy), Lexington, Ky., a brother Mark K. Reed Jr. (Mary) and nephew Mark K. Reed III of Lexington, Ky.
